The Egg
RWCMD
Operatic voices and contemporary dance collide in a surreal journey through the afterlife.
The Egg is a chamber opera devised with composer Tomos Owen Jones for RWCMD’s Atmosphere Festival, inspired by Andy Weir’s short story of the same name.
The work explores questions of mortality, identity, and human connection through a journey into the afterlife, asking audiences to reconsider how lives intersect across time and experience.
Combining operatic voice with contemporary dance, the production developed a visual language shaped through gesture, movement, and physical storytelling. Voices emerged from beyond the stage itself, creating a separation between body and sound that reshaped how the audience encountered the narrative.
Presented by May Street Opera at the Bute Theatre, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, in May 2023.
