Hansel & Gretel
May street opera
An accessible adaptation of Hansel and Gretel shaped through play, transformation, and sustainable design.
Hansel and Gretel was a one-hour adaptation of Humperdinck’s opera created with students at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, featuring an updated libretto designed to feel accessible and inclusive for young audiences.
The production drew inspiration from colouring books and wooden building blocks, with rotating and rearranged set pieces transforming the stage into a series of shifting environments. Constructed from repurposed cardboard, alongside reused props and costumes sourced from RWCMD, the design embraced simple theatrical play and sustainable making.
Presented by May Street Opera at the Dora Stoutzker Hall, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, in June 2022.
