La traviata

wedmore Opera

A site-specific staging placing audiences within the intimacy and fragility of Violetta’s world.

This production of La Traviata transformed the nave of St Mary’s Church, Wedmore into a traverse performance space, placing the audience within the world of the opera itself. The aisle became both ballroom and boudoir, a space for celebration, confrontation, and intimacy, before the church transformed into Violetta’s final sanctuary, where the audience witnessed her final hours like a congregation gathered in vigil.

Featuring a community chorus alongside a professional cast and orchestra, the production brought local voices into the heart of Verdi’s opera, creating a shared theatrical experience shaped by proximity, music, and collective performance.
