Gwlad! Gwlad!

National Eisteddfod & Awen

“Gwlad? Dwedai wrthoch chi beth mae gwlad yn golygu . . .”

“Country? I’ll tell you what country means to me…”

Gwlad! Gwlad! is a collision of land, song, people, and time — a surreal journey into the heart of nationalism.

Written by Welsh writer Chris Harris, with music by Stacey Blythe, the piece explores the legacy of the Welsh national anthem through episodic storytelling that moves between memory, ritual, performance, and imagined futures.

Performed at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in Pontypridd — where the anthem itself was composed — the production brought together professional artists and performers from Lansiad, Awen Cultural Trust’s training initiative for emerging performers.

The work asks what a nation means, who it belongs to, and how songs shape collective identity across generations.
