The Bartered Bride
Presented by Bristol Opera
The Bartered Bride is a comic opera by Smetana that explores love, tradition, and community through the story of a young couple fighting for their future against the expectations of those around them. Beneath its humour and theatrical energy lies a portrait of a tightly knit village where personal choices are never entirely private.
This production relocates the opera to a rural British village in 1953, during a street party celebrating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Set against a backdrop of post-war optimism and communal celebration, the village becomes a space of shared joy and scrutiny, where gossip travels fast and tradition runs deep.
Marina and Johnny’s love story unfolds under the watchful eyes of the village, as Marina is expected to enter an arranged marriage brokered by her parents and the marriage broker. The chorus becomes both participant and commentator, celebrating, pressuring, and shaping the world around the couple in equal measure. The final act transforms the village’s homemade street party into a circus-like spectacle, created and performed by the community itself.
Featuring the Annette Adams School of Dancing alongside guest circus performers, this production embraces Smetana’s blend of comedy and humanity, celebrating the joy, absurdity, and emotional truth at the heart of communal life.
