Captain CaPaTa’s Adventure
Baby Opera (R&D)
Captain CaPaTa’s Adventure is a deaf led, multi sensory opera for babies and their parents and caregivers, welcoming both hearing and deaf families into a shared theatrical experience. The work was created with Operasonic and inspired by their work on the Lullaby Project with SENCOM and the local community.
The piece follows CaPaTa, a young pirate, and his trusted first mate ParaPara as they journey across a mysterious island to rebuild their ship. Along the way, they repair their sail, recover their lost gold, and follow the stars home.
At the heart of the work is British Sign Language as the driving force of the performance. BSL shapes the rhythm, structure, and storytelling, acting as both narrative and conductor. Performed by a deaf performer as ParaPara and a hearing performer as CaPaTa, alongside hearing and deaf musicians, the piece creates a rich dialogue between sound, movement, and sign.
The opera invites its audience into an intimate, sensory world where communication extends beyond words.
