La Traviata
Presented by Wedmore Opera
Verdi’s La Traviata tells the story of Violetta Valéry, a woman torn between the freedom she cherishes and the love that could redeem her. Beneath the glitter of Parisian society lies a world of sacrifice, illusion, and fragile hope, all brought to life through Verdi’s luminous score.
This site-specific production reimagined the nave of St Mary’s Church, Wedmore as a traverse stage, drawing the audience into Violetta’s world. The aisle became both ballroom and boudoir, a space for revelry, reflection, and intimacy, before the church itself transformed into her final sanctuary, where love and mortality meet in stillness.
Featuring a community chorus alongside a professional cast and orchestra, the production united local voices in a powerful reimagining of Verdi’s enduring masterpiece.
